Maryland Registers Nation’s First AI Project Management Apprenticeship, Sponsored by Master of Project Academy

On September 8, 2026, the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council registered the first Registered Apprenticeship in the United States dedicated to AI Project Management — a two-year paid pathway into leading AI deployment inside organizations. The sponsor is Master of Project Academy, a project management training provider founded in 2012.
MIT researchers found that 95% of enterprise generative-AI pilots produce no measurable P&L return, and RAND found the leading root causes of AI project failure are organizational rather than technical. The failure point is the deployment layer — where an AI application meets a real organization.

The program pairs 4,000 hours of mentored on-the-job learning with 340 hours of related instruction — 219 of them AI-specific — anchored to PMBOK 8. It is registered under the U.S. Department of Labor occupation Information Technology Project Manager (O*NET 15-1299.09, RAPIDS 1048) as MATC Program #2575, with eleven work processes including dedicated AI System Integration & Governance. Apprentices are full-time W-2 employees of participating employers from day one — paid employment, not tuition. Employers join the program; individuals participate through an employer. Master of Project Academy will employ apprentices in its own operations alongside participating employers.
The market is already pricing the gap: forward-deployed-engineer postings grew 1,000%+ in a year at $300,000–$550,000 — nearly all vendor-side. The apprenticeship builds the organization-side counterpart: AI project managers on the enterprise’s own payroll, accountable across every vendor.
