What if one of the most important skills for business leaders today isn’t predicting what will happen next but learning how to prepare for what could happen next?

Certified Futurists and twin sisters Jenny Dinnen and Katie Rucker, founders of Next Gen Collaborative, use strategic foresight to help leaders challenge assumptions, explore multiple possibilities and better prepare their organizations for what’s next.
That question is at the heart of Next Gen Collaborative, a strategic foresight and advisory firm founded by Certified Futurists and twin sisters Jenny Dinnen and Katie Rucker.
At a time when artificial intelligence, demographic shifts, changing workforce expectations, new technologies, and rapidly evolving consumer behavior are challenging long-held business assumptions, Dinnen and Rucker are bringing the discipline of strategic foresight into the conversations organizations are having about their futures. And despite the title, being a futurist isn’t about predicting the future.
“People often hear ‘futurist’ and assume our job is to tell them what is going to happen,” said Dinnen. “It’s really the opposite. No one knows exactly what the future will look like. Strategic foresight helps leaders recognize change earlier, question assumptions, and consider different possibilities so they aren’t caught preparing for only one version of the future.”
From Studying What Is to Exploring What Could Be
Dinnen and Rucker came to strategic foresight through decades of experience in research, insights and business leadership.
The sisters lead MacKenzie Corporation, the research and insights firm founded by their father more than 40 years ago. That experience gives them a foundation in understanding people, behavior, customer expectations, and how organizations respond to change. Their work as Certified Futurists takes that thinking a step further.
“Research helps us understand what is happening today,” said Rucker. “Strategic foresight helps us explore what could happen tomorrow. When you bring the two together, you can begin asking much more powerful questions about where change may be headed, what it could mean, and what organizations should be thinking about now.”
Strategic foresight examines emerging signals, patterns, and forces of change and considers how they might interact to create different possible futures. Rather than developing a strategy around a single forecast, organizations can explore multiple scenarios and identify risks, opportunities, and decisions that might otherwise be overlooked. The goal isn’t to replace traditional strategic planning; it’s to make it more resilient.
Why Futurist Thinking Matters Now
The approach is particularly relevant as organizations confront changes that are difficult to evaluate using historical experience alone.
Artificial intelligence is perhaps the most visible example. Technology is advancing faster than many organizations can determine how it should be used, what it will mean for their workforce and customers, and where human judgment will remain essential. But AI is only one force reshaping the future. Demographic change, generational transitions, evolving customer expectations, new ways of working, and shifting attitudes toward businesses and institutions are occurring simultaneously.
According to Dinnen and Rucker, that makes the ability to think about the future more important: not because organizations can predict it, but because they can’t.
“The danger is assuming tomorrow will simply be an extension of today,” said Rucker. “When change is happening this quickly, leaders need ways to challenge what they think they know and consider possibilities they may not have planned for.”
Next Gen Collaborative works with businesses, leadership teams, associations, and other organizations to bring that longer-term perspective into strategic decision-making through strategic foresight, research and insights, facilitated planning, workshops, leadership retreats and keynote presentations.
But Dinnen and Rucker say the ultimate objective is larger than any individual engagement: helping organizations develop their own ability to think effectively about change.
“We build capability, not dependency,” said Rucker. “We want leaders and teams to become better at recognizing change, asking better questions, and thinking together so they are better equipped to navigate what comes next.”
